Weather warnings in Nice

Storms on south coast cause trouble for transport

featured in News & Reviews Author Pam Williamson, Nice Editor Updated

The latest weather pattern to descend upon the French south coast has brought with it rain, thunder and high winds.

The Alpes-Maritimes region has been placed on a yellow rain and thunderstorms warning today by Météo France. The bad weather is expected to last all day, before the sun's return on Saturday.

According to the French Observatory of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms, Alpes-Maritimes have been particularly affected by electrical activity, with some 1876 lightning strikes being recorded.

Nice Cote d'Azur airport has had to suspend landings with flights currently being diverted to Turin and Marseille. Take-offs are continuing as normal but it would be wise to contact your airline in advance of travel.

Maximum temperatures today will be between 11 and 20 degrees, with strong winds expected to reach up to 75 km/h.
