Shaking things up in Nice
Tremors were felt throughout the region
At 21:37 on Saturday 8th October 2016 an earthquake hit off the coast of San Remo on the Italian Riviera. The tremors could be felt along the French Riviera from Menton to the city of Nice.
The earthquake, measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale is the second one in recent months. Although the epicentre was in the sea off the coast of San Remo in Italy the tremors were felt in the towns of Menton, the principality of Monaco, Cagnes-sur-Mer and in the city of Nice.
According to experts earthquakes are relatively common in south-east France. Records that date back some 300 years, show that the region has experienced 10 quakes registering a magnitude of 5.5 or higher in the 20th century. The largest quake, which hit on May 14, 1913 at Volx, Moyenne-Durance, registered a magnitude of 7.5.
There was no damage recorded from this latest earthquake.
