Nice reveals its skeletons
Human remains uncovered at the site for new tram station
The discovery was made last week as archaeologists were excavating the area ready for foundations to be laid for the new Garibaldi tram station in nice.
Archaeologists discovered the human skeletons and have estimated that they could date back to the modern medieval period. The remains could be proof that a battle took place in the area at the city gates and along the ramparts of the original city of Nice.
"Several bodies were found", confirmed Franck Sumera, chief curator of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC), "upside down and buried in a hurry".
To avoid damage or looting the skeletons have been removed and will undergo further investigation. This is not the first time human remains have been discovered on the new tram line, which runs along the route the ancient city walls.
