Nice-Thiers train station was originally built in 1870 and has served as a main transport hub for the Cote d'Azur since then, bringing tourists and business to the French Riviera.

With the arrival of high-speed train connections to Genoa in 2018 and Paris in 2023, plus the expansion of the Nice tram network, it is now crucial that the Gare de Nice benefits from this urban renewal project.

Welcoming guests from across Europe, the neighbourhood of Gare Thiers will be the gateway to the city of Nice and must now reflect all that this wonderful city has to offer. On Thursday 20th October 2016 the final selection for the new building was presented.

A futuristic design by Danial Libeskind, a New Yorker who has a passion for Nice, the new structure will be reminiscent of a multifaceted diamond. "I was inspired forms of mineral azurite, a harmonious crystallization to create a building that can be seen from all angles and thus help to eliminate the border between the two parts of the city. It will also serve to reflect the city, light and landscape." Libeskind was also responsible for the design of the master plan for Ground Zero in New York.

Work is due to begin in the last quarter of 2017 and should be finished by the end of 2019.
