Rue Jules Bianchi in Nice
Tribute to the Formula 1 driver who died in 2015
The city of Nice has made a lasting tribute to Formula 1 driver, Jules Bianchi. The Nice local died in July 2015 after being in a coma for nine months following a crash at the Japanese Grand Prix in October 2014.
The young Nicoise, who was only 25 years old when he suffered severe head injuries during the Japanese Grand Prix, was remembered during the ceremony on Monday evening where Christian Estrosi, former Mayor of Nice and former professional motorcyclist, unveiled the new street sign.
Rue Jules Bianchi is near the city's Allianz Riviera stadium and links up with the Rue Camille Muffat, named after the Nice-born 2012 Olympic swimming champion who died in a helicopter crash in Argentina in March 2015, also at the age of 25.
Bianchi's father Philippe told local media, "Jules loved football. We are delighted with the position, in such a dynamic zone, so full of promise."
Former rival, Jean-Eric Vergne posted an image of the sign on his Instagram saying "Merci Nice...we miss you Jules."
A portrait of Jules Bianchi, engraved on a large aluminium panel, now also stands at the foot of the Allianz Riviera Stadium. The area is sure to be a pilgrimage for fans of the young driver and F1.
