Notre-Dame de Nice

Largest Roman Catholic church in Nice

featured in Sights & sites

The Notre-Dame basilica was built in the 1860s, shortly after Nice was incorporated into France after the Second Italian War of Independence. It is a Neo-Gothic structure, dominated by two 65 metre square towers and a large rose window above the entrance. It is not a cathedral but it is the largest Roman Catholic church in Nice.

The grand white stone building is dominated by two square towers each standing 31m high, three porches line the facade of the church and a large rose window above the entrance depicts the Assumption of Mary. The stained glass windows are particularly beautiful, especially when the bright sunlight streams through them.

As well as being a Catholic church, the basilica also hosts regular concerts and recitals throughout the year as well as annual music festivals during summer and winter.

Visitor comments

  • "Smack in the middle of the long shopping street is this huge white church. It was open when we were there and it was striking inside. Beautiful stained glass windows. I especially like the reflections of the church in the modern building to its left and the scrollwork hinges on the front doors." - Trip Advisor
  • "The facade of this beautiful church is an imitation of its namesake in Paris. Its brilliant white exterior immediately catches your attention from a distance. The interior is equally bright and welcoming. It is much more agreeable to my taste than the local Baroque cathedral. It's well worth a visit." - Trip Advisor
  • "In the night beautiful lights show gorgeous architecture of the Basilique de Notre Dame of Nice. Also in side we can appreciate Ghotic style. Is in a big main avenue, closer some stores." - Trip Advisor
