The Nice IronMan 2017 event will bring an end to the symbolic mourning period that closed the Promenade des Anglais to any event after the attack on July 14th 2016.

No major events have taken place on the Promenade des Anglais since the attack that killed 86 people at the Bastille Day 2016 celebrations. The Nice Carnival, the Paris-Nice cycle race and the Nice Marathon have all been moved to different locations for the remainder of 2016 and the first half of 2017.

Usually hosted in June the Nice IronMan 2017 has moved this annual event to the 23rd July 2017 so that it can be the first sporting event to enjoy the prestigious setting after the symbolic mourning period.

"Following the dramatic events of 14 July, we decided that no protest would take place on [the] Promenade des Anglais until July 14, 2017. The 13th edition of the Ironman of Nice will therefore take place [on] Sunday July 23, 2017 and it will be the return of the sport on the Promenade des Anglais ", said Christian Estrosi, former Mayor of Nice, and the current President of the Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, on his Twitter account.
