Baume Obscure Cave, St Vallier de Thiey

A unique festival of shapes, colours & music 60 metres below ground

featured in Sights & sites

The cave boasts a beautiful landscape and mineral gems that are the result of the slow and steady flow of water and limestone. Sound and lighting have been added to make the forms more spectacular.

This museum gives visitors feelings and sensations similar to those of a speleologist continually discovering, with the light of his lamp, an infinity of shapes and colours in the limestone rock.

Along the length of the picturesque course in a 700 metre loop, and guided by an original score by composer Christophe Guyard, the subtle play of light and shade seems to bring the cave to life.

Who should go

Great children's activities, so the perfect place for a family day out. You will experience a captivating sensory adventure that is both entertaining and educational.

Visitor comments

  • "A great experience for children to discover a cave. The treasure hunt made the trip even better, the lights and sounds gave us the impression to be in a fairy land. The cave is an excellent place to visit when the weather is not the best" - Trip Advisor
  • "It was nice that you could walk through the cave and tunnels by yourself. It was slippery, but they warned us at forehand for this. You were guided through by audio on speakers in the cave. Our 5 year old son found it a little bit scary, until he was allowed to carry the big flashlight from us. He didn't like the music they were playing, we taught the music was funny. The cave was beautiful with nice stalagmites and stalagtites. A good way to explain the working of this to our son. There was nice water and a waterfall inside the cave." - Trip Advisor
  • "Went for an adventure walk through the tunnels and caves and it was fun. This is almost and adventure trail experience with steep, narrow passageways to beautiful chambers made even more dramatic by the added light and sound effects. A fair number of stairs since you are going down a long way and then need to climb back up, but they have placed 'show stations' at reasonable intervals in the climb to allow for breaks. A shout out to Battiste the English-speaking guide - happy, knowledgeable and a great host for the Grotte." - Trip Advisor
