Chase the sun, late summer getaway in Nice

When it turns cold, the sun still shines on the Cote d'Azur

featured in News & reviews Author Pam Williamson, Nice Editor Updated

For many of us, the summer holiday period is over. It's back to work, kids back to school and the first frost can be felt in the early morning...but don't forget that the sun can still be shining in other parts of the world and specifically on the Cote d'Azur.

Maximum temperatures in Nice during September and October can still reach up to 24º C, with the water remaining a pleasant 25º C. You can certainly still enjoy the beach in October, so don't rule Nice out for the half term holiday week.

We've put together a few ideas to help you make the most of your late summer break in Nice.

How to get here

With the convenience of an international airport only 8km from the centre of Nice, flying is by far the quickest and easiest option. The regular 20-minute bus service that runs between the airport and the city means that you will get to your end destination quickly. You might prefer the comfort and ease of an airport transfer or taxi, both of which are readily available.

Where to stay

Many hotels in Nice will stay open throughout the winter months as the cosmopolitan, seaside city of Nice is a popular destination around Christmas and into the New Year when the Nice Carnival takes place. Getting a last minute summer booking for September or October could bring a few special deals your way. Some of our favourite hotels include the exclusive Suisse Hotel close to the heart of Vieux Nice and the ideally located La Malmaison Hotel.

What to do

No trip to Nice would be complete without enjoying a morning at the Provencal market on the Cours Saleya right in the heart of the old part of the town. In fact, you may well want to enjoy more of the day here as you can sit at one of the cafes or restaurants that surround the market and enjoy some pastis and apero nibbles.

Part of the joy of this cosmopolitan city is being able to walk along the Promenade des Anglais, or through the Place Massena and along the Promenade du Paillon, to soak up the atmosphere. Segway tours, boat trips and cycling tours offer you the perfect chance to enjoy the sights and scenery of Nice.

Where to eat

Once you've had your fill of delicious socca at the market, it's time to start thinking about lunch and then dinner. If a holiday isn't about moving from one meal to the next then maybe you aren't doing it right! The old town of Nice has a great offering of pavement cafes, restaurants nestled down narrow lanes and eateries in the many squares and along the Promenade des Anglais. You will be spoiled for choice.

Take to the water

Did we mention that the water is still a delightful 25º C? Perfect for some late summer watersports such as kayaking or even diving. It might not be quite warm enough for stand-up paddle boarding in a bikini but that maybe depends on how hardy you are...

If getting into the water seems a bit of a tall order then why not consider just being 'on' the water. Chartering a yacht on the French Riviera will always be a somewhat luxurious affair, but with a choice of day hire or week-long charter, you are sure to find the right charter to suit your needs and your budget.
